## When a taxi is worth it Taxis are especially useful when you have heavy luggage, are traveling late, are sharing the fare with several people, or your destination sits far from a subway or bus stop. ## Street taxi or app? You can still use a regular taxi from an official stand or hail one on the street where permitted, but an app is often easier for visitors because it fixes the destination in writing and usually shows an estimated fare. VISITKOREA currently recommends foreigner-friendly services including k.ride, and notes that Uber Taxi also operates in Korea. Korea Tourism Organization’s 2026 transport guide says platforms such as k.ride and Uber Taxi can accept foreign-issued cards. ## In Seoul Seoul publishes metered taxi fares and late-night surcharges. The city also explains that app-based services can show expected fares before the ride. Late-night and out-of-city surcharges can raise the final price, and some premium/brand taxis use different pricing models. ## At Incheon Airport Use designated taxi stands. The airport explicitly warns about illegal solicitation and overcharging by call vans or vehicles posing as taxis. Official pickup zones separate standard, deluxe/jumbo and international/other services. Airport-to-Seoul international taxis can also use zone/section pricing depending on the service. ## Before you get in - Check the license plate against the app assignment when using ride-hailing. - Confirm whether the app fare includes tolls or whether tolls will be added separately. - If paying in-app, avoid paying a second time inside the vehicle. - Keep the destination address in Korean when possible, especially outside major tourist districts. - At night, expect surcharges rather than assuming the daytime estimate will remain exact. ## If something goes wrong In Seoul, the city provides a QR complaint system and multilingual 120 Dasan Call Center support. Keep the full license plate number, receipt and app trip record when reporting a problem. ## The practical rule Use an app when you want a written destination and fare estimate; use an official taxi stand at airports and major transport hubs. Treat any unsolicited driver offering a special fixed fare outside the official flow with caution.

Taxis in Korea: meter fares, ride-hailing apps and the details visitors should check
A taxi can be the easiest solution for luggage, late-night trips and awkward transfers, but app payments, surcharges and airport rules are not identical across every city.
Foreign-friendly taxi apps and overseas-card support have expanded, while Seoul and Incheon Airport continue to publish detailed fare, surcharge and complaint guidance for international visitors.

What we're seeing
For visitors, the strongest value of ride-hailing is not only payment. It reduces destination-language friction and creates a digital trip record that is useful if a fare or route is disputed.
What we still don't know
Taxi fares, app availability, card support and surcharge rules differ by city and service and can change. The detailed Seoul figures should not be assumed to apply nationwide.
