Reserve the shelter before building the hike

Korea National Park Service (KNPS) uses an online reservation system for mountain shelters and other controlled facilities. For shelters, same-day box-office and telephone reservations are not allowed. The English system says reservations normally open at 10:00 on the first day of the month for stays during the following month; if the first is a holiday, the launch moves to the nearest weekday.

Know the booking limits

Current KNPS shelter guidance says a user can hold a maximum of four shelter tickets per month, not for the same date, and one ticket can include up to five people including the reserver. The waitlist is limited to 10% of shelter capacity and a user can hold up to three waitlist positions for different shelters.

A waitlist is not a bed

Waitlists expire two days before the appointed date at 24:00. If capacity remains after that, KNPS says available space can be booked online first-come, first-served until 14:00 on the day of use. Do not travel to the mountain expecting to buy a shelter reservation at the box office.

Payment happens at the shelter

KNPS says you register with the office to confirm the reservation and then pay at the appointed shelter on the day of the visit. Its English FAQ says payment is not required when making the online reservation and can be made in cash. Carry a practical cash backup rather than assuming the online booking charged your card.

A reservation does not override a closure

KNPS also maintains a park-by-park notice board. Its English notices show that trail access, shelters and campgrounds can be restricted or temporarily closed for wildfire prevention, maintenance and safety reasons. A confirmed shelter reservation is therefore only one part of the trip: check the exact park notice and trail-control status again shortly before departure.

Arrival time and trail controls matter

The current shelter guidance lists shelter admission as 15:00–18:00 regardless of season. It also tells hikers to check trekking-time entrance/closure rules. Severe-weather controls or park safety restrictions can still cancel access.

Before you go

Use the official KNPS English reservation portal for the exact park, shelter and date. Recheck the reservation, park notice board, trail-entry cutoff and weather controls shortly before departure, especially in autumn, winter or severe-weather periods.
