The simplest way to think about Daejeon transport

For a first visit, use Subway Line 1 as the city spine, add a bus when your destination sits away from the rail corridor, and use a taxi when you have luggage, arrive late, or want a direct trip.

Subway: easiest for the main east-west visitor corridor

Line 1 links useful visitor anchors including Daejeon Station, Jungangno, City Hall, Government Complex, Yuseong Spa and Guam. Daejeon Transportation Corporation publishes downloadable route maps in English, Chinese, Japanese and several other languages.

Current adult subway fares published by the city and transport corporation are KRW 1,550 by transit card for Zone 1 and KRW 1,650 for Zone 2. A single-use regular ticket costs more.

Do not rely on one generic first/last-train time: schedules vary by station and direction. Check the exact station timetable for early or late travel.

Bus: use it for the gaps Line 1 does not cover

Daejeon city buses are often the practical final leg for museums, parks, outer neighborhoods and attractions away from a subway station.

The city currently lists the adult general-bus fare at KRW 1,500 with a transit card and KRW 1,700 in cash. Route numbers and stop patterns can change, so use current route information on the travel day rather than treating an old static route list as permanent.

Transit card and transfers

A transit card is the easiest choice if you will make more than one local trip. Tmoney's official visitor information says its transit products can be used on buses, subways and taxis nationwide.

Daejeon Transportation Corporation states that a transit card is required for transfer discounts. The published rule is generally within 30 minutes after alighting, up to three transfers, with the subway transfer counted once. Extra subway fare can apply when a trip enters Zone 2.

Tap correctly when leaving buses or gates if you want the transfer system to recognize the trip.

Taxi: useful for luggage, late hours and awkward final legs

Daejeon currently lists a standard taxi base fare of KRW 4,300 for the first 1.8 km, with metered distance/time additions.

From 16 March 2026, the city increased late-night surcharges. The published late-night periods are 20% from 23:00 to 24:00, 30% from 00:00 to 02:00, and 20% from 02:00 to 04:00. Out-of-city surcharges are separate.

For visitors who do not speak Korean, keep the Korean place name and address ready to show or copy into a map/taxi app.

Quick decision rule

  • Daejeon Station → central city / City Hall / Government Complex / Yuseong corridor: start with Line 1.
  • Destination away from Line 1: compare a bus with a short taxi from the nearest useful station.
  • Heavy luggage, family group, late arrival or short door-to-door trip: taxi may be worth the higher cost.
  • Several rides in one day: use a compatible transit card so transfer discounts can apply.
