Oeyangpo Coastal Battery & Historic Village
Oeyangpo is a lived-in settlement at Gadeokdo's southern end with traces of Japanese coastal gun emplacements built around the 1904 Russo-Japanese War. The historic structures reveal the militarization of the island and its effects on local lives. This is not the same site as the late-World War II artificial tunnels at Daehang Harbor.
A May 2026 field blog paired Oeyangpo and Daehang but does not establish that all batteries are open inside or that every 520 bus continues to Oeyangpo. Plans for Gadeok's new airport are distinct from current public access. Check Gangseo-gu notices, the day's bus destination and on-site restrictions before traveling.
Why go
Treat the visit as a respectful walk through old gun positions, former defensive works and a residential village. Stay on public lanes and look at remains that are openly accessible; do not enter abandoned houses or bunker interiors without permission. Read the interpretation to distinguish these early-1900s structures from the later Daehang tunnels. Allow separate time and return transport if pairing with a Yeondaebong hike or Daehang shore walk.
